October in Austin, Honestly.
Not everything happening this month is worth rearranging your life for. These are the weekends, traditions and weird collisions we’d actually put on our own calendar.
The short list.
Not a comprehensive calendar. Just the events big enough, good enough or specifically Austin enough that they’re worth knowing before your weekends disappear.
Austin City Limits Music Festival
Both ACL weekends have wrapped: Oct. 2–4 and Oct. 9–11. Keeping it here for the full-month picture; the remaining picks below are still ahead.
Official ACL guide →Hot Luck
The food festival for people who do not want a food festival to feel like a trade show. Live-fire cooking, chefs actually cooking in front of you, plus music at Mohawk.
See the 2026 events →Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix
The race is Sunday, Oct. 25, with the official track schedule running Friday through Sunday. Even if you never go near the circuit, this is one of those weekends when airport, hotel and southeast-Austin traffic become part of the event.
Race schedule →Viva La Vida Festival & Parade
Mexic-Arte’s 43rd annual Día de los Muertos celebration is free, family-friendly and actually rooted in Austin cultural history. The Grand Procession starts at noon, with art, food, lowriders and performances through 6 PM.
Festival details →40th Annual AIA Austin Homes Tour
Nine architect-designed homes, two days, and one of the better ways to see how Austin architects are actually solving for site, material, climate and everyday living instead of scrolling renderings online.
See the tour →Austin Film Festival
Eight days of screenings with a writers conference layered into the opening weekend. This is the Austin festival where the person who wrote the thing matters as much as the person on the poster.
Festival + conference →U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game
Michigan State vs. North Dakota in Cedar Park on Halloween. Especially funny timing in the same month Austin is suddenly talking seriously about NHL expansion.
Game details →Around Austin, October 23–25
The weekend includes Formula 1 at COTA, Texas–Ole Miss at DKR, the AIA Homes Tour, and Viva La Vida at 4th and Congress. Here are the times and locations.
Formula 1
COTA traffic and visitor volume affect the airport and southeast side well beyond the circuit.
Texas vs. Ole Miss
Texas hosts Ole Miss at DKR at 6:30 p.m. CT. Leave time between daytime events and the game, and check current ticket and parking options before heading over.
AIA Homes Tour
Nine homes across Austin. Your day is intentionally mobile, so route planning matters more than usual this year.
Viva La Vida
The Grand Procession and downtown festival add another reason not to assume Congress Avenue is a normal Saturday.
What kind of October do you want?
You do not need to do all of this. Pick the version of Austin you actually want to experience.
If you only want to commit once.
F1 weekend if you want the giant Austin weekend. Oct. 24 if you want to stack Texas football with design/culture. AFF opening weekend if movies and writers are more your speed.
Do Viva La Vida.
It is free, daytime, hands-on and built for all ages. AIA Homes Tour can work for older kids who actually care about design, but its tour rules are stricter. For Halloween-specific family programming, Austin Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo runs select Friday/Saturday nights through Oct. 24.
Hot Luck is the obvious answer.
It is compact, chef-driven and paired with music rather than sprawling across a convention center. For music, check the Mohawk shows included in Hot Luck’s official lineup.
AIA Homes Tour + Viva La Vida is the Austin doubleheader.
One gives you private residential design. The other gives you public cultural tradition. They land the same weekend and show two very different versions of what makes the city feel like itself.
October is stacked.
Texas hosts Florida Oct. 17, Ole Miss Oct. 24 and Mississippi State Oct. 31. F1 runs Oct. 23–25. Then Michigan State and North Dakota play the Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Cedar Park on Halloween night.
Three things worth checking twice.
F1 brings citywide visitor traffic. Check routes and parking for the events you plan to attend, and allow extra travel time.
F1, Hot Luck, AIA Homes Tour and AFF can all change availability. Use the official links above rather than third-party calendars.
Texas–Florida kicks off Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. CT; Texas–Ole Miss is Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. CT. Check the official AFF schedule for individual screenings and ticket availability.
