What to Actually Do in Austin This June
The Austin events we’d put on our own calendar.
June is when Austin reorganizes around the heat.
Outdoor traditions shift to evenings because afternoons hit 100°F. Indoor spaces with reliable A/C — the Paramount, the State, the Bullock IMAX — quietly become some of the best places to spend a Saturday. On June 19, Juneteenth carries particular significance here. The holiday originated in Texas, and East Austin’s observance has been a local tradition for decades. Three events define the month. The rest are there when you want something smaller, easier, or indoors.
The three events that define June in Austin.
Blues on the Green
Zilker Park, 2100 Barton Springs RdOne of the few Austin traditions that still feels unmistakably Austin.
Austin’s longest-running free concert series, 30+ years on the Great Lawn. Picnic blankets, dogs welcome, kids running around. Lineup leans local: Escovedo, Behrens, and Hernandez on Night 1; Brownout, Mama Duke, and Nik Parr on Night 2. Presented by H-E-B / Waterloo Media.
A free Austin tradition with a low-effort plan. Families. Friend groups. Date night if you’re fine with crowds. Skip if you hate heat, want reserved seating, or dislike large outdoor gatherings.
Music starts at 7 PM; arrive 5–6 to claim space. 95°F+ at start, cools fast once the sun’s behind the trees. Parking limited — transit, bike, or rideshare. Street closures 5–11 PM both nights.
Central Texas Juneteenth
Parade: East MLK Blvd + Salina St → Rosewood Neighborhood ParkOne of Austin’s most important annual cultural celebrations.
Juneteenth originated in Texas, and Austin’s observance is a longstanding East Austin tradition organized by GEAYA. The day starts with a 2K, then a parade with floats and a marching band down Chicon, concluding with an all-day festival at Rosewood Park. The city’s historic observance — not a recent civic addition.
Anyone in Austin on June 19 — locals, newcomers, visitors. Especially if you want to understand East Austin’s history beyond what real-estate listings suggest. Families welcome at both the parade and the festival.
Parade route is roughly one mile; comfortable shoes and water. Street closures (Comal, MLK, Chicon, Rosewood) run 5 AM–10 PM. Paid parking in East Austin and downtown; transit is easier. Festival runs into the evening; historically a fireworks closer.
Paramount Summer Classic Film Series
Paramount Theatre + State Theatre + Bullock IMAX + Hyperreal Film ClubThe city’s best excuse to spend a summer evening indoors.
52nd year of one of Austin’s longest-running summer traditions. The Paramount closes mid-June for an 8–9 month restoration, but the series continues at the State Theatre, the Bullock’s 62×84 ft IMAX (first time), and Hyperreal. June highlights: Singin’ in the Rain, Jaws on IMAX, Wizard of Oz 3D, 2001.
An indoor evening when it’s 100°F. Film lovers. Date night above the streaming bar. Families for the kid-friendly screenings (Wizard of Oz 3D, Singin’ in the Rain). Skip if you want a social festival atmosphere.
Confirm the venue per screening — mid-June onward, films shift between State, Bullock IMAX, and Hyperreal. Tickets at austintheatre.org. Parking: $6 at 600 Congress for Paramount/State; free at Bullock garage for IMAX.
If you want something else.

Three things to check before you commit.
Outdoor events start at 7 PM specifically because it’s 95°F+ before then. Cools fast after sunset. Bring water, sunscreen, a layer for after dark.
Zilker (Blues) is the toughest — transit, bike, or rideshare. Paramount: $6 at 600 Congress. Bullock IMAX: free garage. East Austin (Juneteenth): paid lots downtown, plan ahead.
Most picks are free, no ticket needed. Paramount Classics and Asian American Film Festival are ticketed — buy ahead, especially IMAX. Schedules and venues change; always check the organizer’s site for the specific date.
